The Last International
The Last Internationale, a “rebel-rock group” from New York City, have had a stint with Epic Records, toured with Robert Plant, Neil Young, and The Who, and appeared on Late Show with David Letterman in 2014. Frontwoman and bassist Delila Paz and guitarist Edgey Pires are the group’s core members, who claim folk influences such as Woody Guthrie, Joe Hill, Odetta, and Buffy Sainte-Marie, and more contemporary ties to rock groups like MC5, Rage Against the Machine, The Raconteurs, and many more.
Built for the Sea
Originally formed as an indie-rock group from the mid-2000s in San Francisco, Built for the Sea’s two core members Lia Rose and Daniel McKenzie have moved the group’s sound into more atmospheric, ambient-electronic territories.
Bell’s Roar
Name-checking the radical scholar and activist bell hooks, Bell’s Roar is the solo project of New Yorker Sean Desiree, who blends loopy post-rock guitar work, hip hop beats, and R&B vocals into her eclectic, politically-charged, DIY performances.
Ryan Harvey
The final act on tonight’s bill is Ryan Harvey and Kareem Samara. Co-owner of Firebrand Records, the Baltimore-based Ryan Harvey has built a name for himself performing anarchist-oriented, agitprop folk music, while Kareem Samara is British-Arab oudist and multi-instrumentalist from London who specializes in Arabic folk and resistance songs. Press materials for the duo explain: “From the trajectory of a post-Arab Spring world, their songs draw connections between peoples, histories, and movements for radical social change – from Egypt to Baltimore, Turkey to Palestine.”
