State Flower
State Flower was born out of a group of Santa Barbara musicians who had all collaborated with Santa Barbara based singer/songwriter Cory Sipper on her 2015 release “Make Your Magic,” and continued to work with her on her subsequent EP “Instructions for a Reset.” Cory had assembled a group of legendary local talents, including Erik Herzog (original drummer of Wasted Tape, Lapdog as well as the bands Moab and Buellton), Dean Dinning (Toad the Wet Sprocket, Lapdog), and Tom Lackner (Jeff Bridges) to realize the vision of her new songs at Zach Madden’s Good Land Sound in Goleta, CA.

When that project came to completion, the musicians decided to keep recording together under the name “State Flower.” Film composer Todd Capps (Bad Astronaut), who had been accompanying Cory live on keyboards brought in the group’s first song “Sign of You,” which features a melody written entirely by Capps, with lyrics by Madden and Dinning. Erik Herzog laid the foundation for the track, one of his last performances (along with “Is it only Love”) before he passed away.

“She is Sound” and “Colina” would feature drum performances by Austin Beede (The Coral Sea), and backup vocals by Lois Mahalia (Joe Walsh), who came on board to sing on three of the five songs. Lois had been a key featured-vocalist on Zach’s previous recordings, as well as his live sets, and her arrangements instantly took the songs into a perfect spot where they could be unique, but familiar at the same time.

All of the songs were eventually mixed by Angus Cooke (Jack Johnson, Dishwalla, Jeff Bridges) and mastered by Bruce Winter (Wasted Tape, Deadwood Score), a true labor of love, from a group of long time Santa Barbara friends.

For Madden and Dinning, “State Flower” was a chance to stretch out of their usual roles and push in to new territory. Dinning coached Madden into a softer vocal sound than he had used previously, and Dinning played most of the electric guitar parts, including the solos on “Sign of You” and “Colina”.

“State Flower” stands as a document of a group of friends who all wanted to continue making music together - even as they lost one of their own. They dedicate this album to Erik’s wife Amy, and his son Lucas.

I must have been born to sing, because I was named after Mahalia Jackson http://mahaliajackson.com an amazing woman known as the "Queen of Gospel".
I started performing at the age of 5 and toured throughout the Caribbean singing with my family in churches and on any stage we could find. It was there I developed my love for Gospel, R&B and Jazz.

I eventually moved to New York, continued singing, and have been fortunate to have performed and recorded with Kenny Loggins, Michael MacDonald, Norman Gimble, and many others.

Now my focus is on my own career and I'd love to have you follow where it takes me.
