Right Side Up Poets and Kip Fulbeck present “Talking with Strangers: An Evening of Spoken Word”

• Tuesday, November 13, 2012
• Comical, passionate and inspiring performances by UCSB’s best current and alumni spoken word poets
• MC’ed by Kip Fulbeck, internationally acclaimed performer and artist

"Talking to Strangers: An Evening of Spoken Word" is the inaugural performance by Right Side Up Poets, a group of performers from UC Santa Barbara.

Having sold out dozens of shows on the UCSB campus, Kip Fulbeck’s spoken word poets finally come to SOhO in downtown Santa Barbara.

"Talking to Strangers" features the best performers from Fulbeck’s groundbreaking course – the first of its kind ever taught at the university level.

Since 2011, these young, talented performers have amazed audiences throughout the west coast with their humor, insight and honesty.

RSU members have performed at the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival, LabArt Gallery, Japanese American National Museum, Art, Design & Architecture Museum and Jane Deering Gallery and have opened for acclaimed spoken word artists Beau Sia, Rudy Francisco, Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye. RSU members Mel Rosenberg, Chanel Miller and Demi Anter also won UCSB’s first annual college-wide poetry slam this year, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd out of over 35 poets.

Kip Fulbeck
“Art 137: Spoken Word” was started by Kip Fulbeck in 1999 as the first spoken word course ever offered as part of a college art program’s core curriculum. Despite some initial reservations from now-retired faculty about the legitimacy of spoken word as an art form, the course has been embraced by the department and students alike, becoming one of the most sought after and popular courses offered.

An internationally acclaimed artist, Fulbeck has performed and exhibited in over 20 countries and throughout the United States, and has been featured on CNN, MTV, National Public Radio and The TODAY Show.

Right Side Up Poets
Starting in 2011, a group of Kip Fulbeck’s former students began organizing their own shows outside of class, bringing professional spoken word performance to the Santa Barbara community.

In addition to performing at venues like LabArt Gallery, Japanese American National Museum, Art, Design & Architecture Museum, Jane Deering Gallery, the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival and others, RSU members have published in Into the Teeth of the Wind, Solstice, Badlands, The Intriguist and Spectrum Literary Magazine and have received awards for their writing and performance on local and national levels.
