On Thursday June 8th 2017, the Soho will be hosting a benefit celebration of local Americana and original roots music from Santa Barbara and Ventura, featuring some of the region's best classic country, folk, and alt. country groups.

The show is in the spirit of some of the great classic country variety shows (ala the Lousianna Hayride, Wheeling Jamboree, Grand Ole Opry), with a mixture of full electric bands, duos, and original entertainment back-to-back, with only a few brief intermissions throughout the night.

The event is a also a benefit for the Food Bank of Santa Barbara, with the ticket price being $5 with the donation of two items of canned or packaged foods (here's a link to the kind of canned goods the Foodbank is looking for: http://foodbanksbc.org/give- help/donate-food/)--please note, the ticket price is $10 without the food donation--so please bring along some canned goods to help out!

Detroit Sportmen’s Congress
DSC House Majority Leader Matt Sayles is the songwriter of the DSC and founding member of Marquette, Michigan's "Frostbitten Grass" and Ventura California's, "Ventucky String Band." This is Sayles' first departure from string-band music since touring with progressive Texas blues guitarist, Francisco Mirabent in 2006 --and his first project with a full rhythm section.

From their Bylaws:

"The Detroit Sportsmen's Congress was founded on the principle that existing genres of folk-rock, country, and Americana are meant to be crafted and sculpted into new forms of auditory ambulation--and that complacency carries consequences."

Their Mission:

"To draw out the echoing twang, reverb, and darkness from the smoldering remnants of manifest destiny that still mournfully beat in the hearts of our unknowing constituency."

Representatives of the DSC are all professional, hard-laboring proletariat musicians with diverse roots--each of which are derivative of a multitude of genres, backgrounds, and skills.
Big Tweed
With a sound that resonates from the golden age of country music, Big Tweed provides a soundtrack for the honky tonk in all of us. Their initial recording effort (Introducing... Big Tweed, 2010) reminisces of the twang-filled days of California's yesteryear, in a city that has seen its fair share. This six-piece band feels at home whether they play in a crowded dim-lit bar, a barn, or the stages of a county fair, and they have quickly become a favorite to fans from the Rocky Mountains of Montana to their hometown of Ventura, CA.
The Brambles
California duo Carly (ukelele) and Bethany (percussion) are The Brambles. A thorny, sassy yet sweet pair, inspired by Americana Folk ballads and toe tapping tunes. Friends since high school their musical kinship developed when they were serendipitously brought together by their mutual passion of euphoric acoustics in unusual places. In 2014 they made it official and began their passion of yelling harmoniously in public. Musical influences: Head and the Heart, Janis Joplin, The Civil Wars, Etta James, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss, The Everly Brothers, Kate Nash, David Bowie, Billie Holiday.
Matt Armor
Matt Armor began writing songs, and fronting his Southern California band Blazing Haley from 1996-2008.. Along with lead guitarist and songwriter Brian Lakey, David Kruger, and Chris Story, Matt and his band successfully rocked the psychobilly/rockabilly genre for many years. Their debut album, titled Sleeper, self-released in January 1998, and Mas Chingon in 2001 (distributed worldwide by Hepcat Records, Amazon, iTunes, etc.) has received national acclaim. Blazing Haley's songs are also featured on several compilation albums, national TV and radio commercials, and a few episodes of MTV's Nitro Circus.

In 2015, Matt independenly released his self titled 12 song solo album with 9 original songs of good times, heartbreak, and self redemption. As well as three great cover tunes!..Americana, Country swing/blues/alt country/rockabilly...whatever you want to call it! It's a solid record from start to finish...Matt will performing as a duo at the Hayride with the great Barney Tower (Guitar).
Hold Fast Rifle Company
Holdfast Rifle Company is a honky-tonk country band based out of Santa Barbara, California. Some are Santa Barbara natives. Some are Santa Barbara transplants. All of the Holdfast Rifle Company love music, especially that good ol' honky-tonk country that makes your toes tap and your fingers snap.
