Club Mercy Presents: He’s My Brother She’s My Sister at SOhO!

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister seems to invite a broad range of colorful words to describe their music and performances: “flamboyant folk,” “psych-acoustic,” “estranged and glamorous” and “vaudeville-y,” with “alleyway rhythms,” and “earthy swagger.” No doubt this is due to their mélange of musical styles, both modern and antique; their eccentric attire and sense of expression that is both sincere and theatrical; and, to their unique instrumentation, which includes a rhythm section bolstered by a tap dancer.

Brother and sister Robert Kolar and Rachel Kolar split vocal duties, with Robert on guitar and kick drum and Rachel on tambourine. Their voices range from boisterous to introspective, from breezy to emotive. Lauren Brown adds full-body percussion with her fluid tap-dancing and Oliver Newell adds stand up bass with a joyous flair. Aaron Robinson plays lead guitar on a lap slide, veering from nuanced psychedelica to American roots riffs. And Satya Bhabha’s adds unconventional cello playing which is at times sweeping, and at other times bellows like a husky fiddle.

The band’s infectious rhythms and high energy make the sounds come alive and cause even uninitiated crowds to erupt in dance. Their songs ring like pop classics but in a modern framework. It is a recipe that has quickly gained the band a devoted following in their hometown of Echo Park and the surrounding LA area, and that following has spread to every town the band visits.

SOHO RESTAURANT AND MUSIC CLUB
ENHANCES FOOD MENU

75% of Menu Now Sourced Local, Sustainable

SANTA BARBARA, CA.- It’s food month!  The Sustainable, Organic, Local (SOL) Food Festival recently saw 7,000 residents descend on Vera Cruz Park, kicking off a month of food-themed activities including the Eat Local Challenge and Epicure SB.

Appropriately, after 17 years of offering Santa Barbara live music, dining and entertainment, SOHO Restaurant and Music Club has announced the unveiling of a new menu focused on locally grown, organic and sustainable products.

“We’re now committing ourselves to working with local farmers, ranchers and fishermen,” said Gail Hansen, SOHO’s owner.  “We feel this is in the best interest of our local economy, our environment, our health and our community.”

Now serving seasonal, sustainably grown products as often and as close to home as possible, SOHO has teamed up with Farmer Direct Produce, Rancho San Julian, and the Santa Barbara Fish Market to procure its ingredients.  New menu items include the wildly popular Organic Coastal Kale Salad, Rib-eye Steak with White Beans, Organic Veggie Bowl with Organic Peanut Sauce and Brown Rice, and the Daily Catch, lightly blackened on Couscous and Vegetables.

While SOHO has been working to incorporate locally grown ingredients for the last year, it was only recently that Gail and her husband Bob decided to commit significant time and effort into making a dramatic menu change.  Many of the new recipes are Bob’s own, and you will now find him in the SOHO kitchen preparing them for customers.

“It’s what we eat at home, it’s what we believe in, and it’s what we’re now bringing to SOHO,” said Bob.  “Reviews from our customers and even our staff have been extremely positive. It’s all very exciting.”

Patrons can enjoy the new menu inside the restaurant or on the patio.  SOHO is open for dinner from 6-10pm, plus a late night menu on Friday and Saturdays.  Reservations can be made by calling 805.962.7776.  A new happy hour will be announced soon.

Don Carlos (born Euvin Spencer) Legendary Reggae Artist – Born and raised in one of the most deprived regions of Western Kingston, Jamaica, in a district notoriously known as Waterhouse, which incidentally is also a musical spawning ground for many of Reggae’s greatest ever talents, such as King Tubby, original member of Black Uhuru, The Jays, Junior Reid and King Jammy to name but a few, Don Carlos started his singing career back in 1973, as one of the original members of the aforementioned roots vocal group Black Uhuru. Alongside other founding members, Garth Dennis who later went on to joining the Wailing Souls and Derrick Ducky Simpson Uhuru’s central figure, as part of the trio, Don played a prominent role in the recordings of the highly acclaimed Love Crisis album, for producer Prince Jammy in 1977. The said album was later re-released and re-titled as Black Sounds of Freedom. A year after the trio’s ground breaking debut, Don Carlos surprisingly decided to part company in pursuit of a solo career. Having needed at least three years to get the grips of being a soloist, plus developing a knack for song writing and grooming that distinctive, vocal styling it wasn’t until May 1981 that Carlos really took the fraternity by storm, courtesy of a heavy, roots and culture flavored show case album titled Suffering for Negus Roots.

Since then working alongside Goldie, his side kick, co writer and back up vocalist having built and consolidated a staunch following through touring the live circuit, plus 12 solo albums, most notably Harvest Time, Day to Day Living, Them Never Know a Natty Dread have credentials all three issued in 1982, Spread Out 1982 also otherwise known as Laser Beam to which the majority of tracks in this set have been culled, Never Run Away 1984, Just a Passing Glance 1985 and more recently Seven Days a Week a solid joint production venture, between Goldie, Dr. Dread and himself, there has been no turning back.

Although he reached the peak of his solo career during the heydays of the eighties dance hall mania thus celebrating his impact with five top ten hits between 1982 – 1985, Late Night Blues Nice Time Tonight, Dice Cup, Hog & Goat, I’m Not Getting Crazy and Spread Out The latter of which is included here, he is still churning out solid, melodic roots reggae. There’s an old saying in the music industry that claims: What goes around, comes back around. In Dons’ case a request for reinstatement to his former role as lead vocalist for a rejuvenated Black Uhuru reunion eight years ago resulted in a sadly underrated Now album. Amazingly he has been able to maintain dual roles of solo and group member efforts without inflicting a conflict of interest. It is an extremely rare feat if an artist’s repertorire is built without a few mistakes along the way and up until the reunion of original Uhuru in 1990, Carlos’ reputation suffered slightly from over exposure. During this exhaustive and hectic period, one of Jamaica’s leading producers’ of the 70’s and 80’s Bunny Striker Lee was able to coax some of the singer’s finest moments, which are here by recompiled for this nifty set. By cleverly employing the rugged rhythm section of top sessions musicians like Sly & Robbie, the Roots Radics Band plus Santa and Ranchie, This selection shows just how close producer and artist in perfect harmony got to developing the true potential which Carlos has always shown. The opener, Jonnie Big Mouth is a wistful attempt at reaffirming small time braggerts and so called know all’s of their false impression, over that profound Drifter riddim. While Booming Ball utilises Alton Ellis I’m Just a Guy bass line to good effect. And further merits are handsomely gained as the ever reliable Real Rock riddim encapsulates yet another rendering via Ababa John 1. Among other things this collection is a prime example of versions excursions, so finally but certainly not of the least the album’s singnature tune, Laser Beam utilises that old Three Tops It’s Raining riff to great effect. With the recording of All Wood and Doors, veteran composers/vocalists/
musicians James Lee Stanley and Cliff Eberhardt took songs that are practically hard wired into our collective pop culture consciousness and put a uniquely fresh spin on them.

Following on the heels of the critically acclaimed All Wood and Stones by James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf, (vintage Rolling Stones songs reinvented by Batdorf & Stanley), All Wood and Doors is the inevitable next step. And it’s not too early to begin using the word masterpiece.

Choosing the evocative catalog of the seminal rock group, The Doors, Stanley & Eberhardt have maintained all of the Doors mystique, while at the same time bringing something completely new to all these classic songs.

Cliff Eberhardt and James Lee Stanley are wonderful singers and musicians, with unique mastery of their instruments. All Wood and Doors is twelve of their favorite Doors songs. The songs’ timelessness is enhanced by the funk and elegance of these new arrangements and re-interpretations.

The CD features crystal clear, atmospheric acoustic renderings from the Doors songbook. The songs are the true stars of this recording. The arrangements are focused on Eberhardt’s raspy tenor and Stanley’s dulcet baritone, combined with the incredible magic of their acoustic guitar
interplay. The songs are somehow brand new and yet completely familiar.

A truly remarkable spin to the recording is the endorsement and contribution of the Doors original drummer, John Densmore, who committed to being part of this project based upon his fondness for the All Wood and Stones CD. It was John who actually suggested the project when he told James Lee that if James ever did to the Doors songs what he did to the Stones songs, then John wanted to be a part of the recording. John Densmore was the true impetus that created All Wood and Doors.

Then to the astonished joy of Cliff and James Lee, Robby Krieger, original Doors guitarist, emailed James Lee expressing his admiration for All Wood and Stones and volunteering to play guitar on All Wood and Doors. This was simply the icing on the cake. Even now, everyone at Beachwood Recordings is still amazed at this generous endorsement of All Wood and Doors by both Robby and John.

To add further to an already remarkable recording, there is this all star line up of the highly regarded additional guests musicians: Timothy B Schmit (the Eagles), Peter Tork (the Monkees), Paul Barrere (Little Feat), Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney & Wings), Scott Breadman (the Rippingtons, Lindsey Buckingham), the truly remarkable Chad Watson (David Arkenstone, Janis Ian).

This duet cd is now on over a hundred stations and gaining more every day. James’ solo cd, Freelance Human Being, was listed by Fi Magazine as one of the top 200 cd’s of all time, along side Miles Davis, The Beatles, and Joni Mitichell.

Also, Trekies listen up: James Lee Stanley played every kind of alien you can imagine for nine years on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (!). He was most notably… Get read for this… The singing klingingon. Which we all know, is pretty darn cool.
